The What, Who and How of the Dutch American Friendship Treaty visa (DAFT)

Hi, I’m Leonor at Orange Homes Relocation!

I originally trained in the US as a lawyer (with a Master’s of Laws degree) and came to the Netherlands as a Highly Skilled Migrant working in Global Mobility and immigration for a large international company. And, as is common in the expat world, jobs change and my employer closed the business in Amsterdam.  I decided to look at this as an opportunity and Orange Homes helped me change my resident permit to the Dutch American Friendship Visa (DAFT). After 18 months of working in business development and leadership coaching, I decided to focus my efforts on global Mobility and Immigration – I get real satisfaction helping my fellow internationals! This decision led me back to Orange Homes to head up their immigration and DAFT visa services.

What is the Dutch American Friendship Treaty visa?

The Dutch American Friendship Treaty presents a fantastic opportunity for Americans to fulfill their dream of living and working in a European country. The Netherlands has a special agreement with the United States of America that enables American citizens to move here, set up their own business and bring their family as well.

Lets see if you qualify:

  1. Do you have a valid US passport ?
  2. No criminal record ?
  3. Do you have or want to start a business ?
  4. Can you invest starting capital of EUR 4,500 in the business?

if your answers to the 4 questions are YES, then you can apply AND sponsor your spouse/partner and minor aged children (under 18) to the Netherlands.

This visa is open to all types of entrepreneurs, from freelancers to large business owners. There are no restrictions on the type of business, your customers, or where they come from – including the US.

While there are numerous forums and threads saying that this application process is simple, it actually involves expertise in various fields: immigration, business set-up, taxation, handling deadlines, and homefinding. It’s not easy to work out which step comes first and what follows next.

That’s the reason I am here, I know how difficult it is to make that first move. As well as my personal and professional experience that is used to help you through the DAFT process, I also connect you with professionals that provide support with business incorporation and accountancy.  And of course, I can also call on my Orange Homes colleagues to ensure that they find you your new home, schools for your children and help with all the other things you will need, like registering with a doctor and dentist and getting your internet set up.

Contact me now to set up a 40 minute complimentary consultation – tell me what you want to do, and I’ll explain how I can make it happen.
